Swim Test Requirement

Swim Test

Update: April 28, 2022

Due to circumstances related to COVID-19, the CC-GS Committee on Instruction has currently waived the swim test as a graduation requirement for students who are graduating this Spring 2022

Students graduating in or later than Summer 2022 will be required to fulfill the swim test requirement for graduation.

The swim test was established as a graduation requirement for Columbia College students in order to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn and practice this important life -- and life-saving -- skill. While the pandemic has temporarily interrupted this activity, the College's commitment to this opportunity remains, and any student who is not required to complete the swim test for graduation due to the pandemic is strongly urged to develop this skill through some other means, as early as possible.

All Columbia College students are required to pass a swimming test or submit a waiver from University Health Services.

Swimming tests are administered in the Uris Pool, located on the first floor of the Dodge Fitness Center. The test consists of swimming three continuous unassisted laps of the pool (75 yards total) using any stroke or a combination of strokes. Those who do not pass are encouraged to take a Beginner Swim course at the first opportunity. Passing the Beginner Swim course will fulfill your swim test requirement and one Physical Education credit. Students must complete the test in order to receive a diploma, therefore it is highly encouraged that the test is taken prior to the last academic semester.

Swim Tests are offered on various Wednesdays and Sundays. Sign up Here!

Requirement Waiver Due to Medical Condition

  • Students who request to have their physical education activities limited or waived because of a medical condition should contact Jeff Ryder ([email protected]), Director of Physical Education and Recreation.
  • In some situations, students may require an evaluation by a clinician at Columbia Health in order to receive a waiver. In consultation with the Director, Physical Education and Recreation, students may be instructed to email Dr. Melanie Bernitz, Senior Vice President Columbia Health, who facilitates these evaluations. All evaluation requests are considered but approval is not guaranteed.
  • The waiver request deadline for Spring 2022 is February 11th, 2022.
